Pregnancy Support Group
A place to connect for those who are pregnant
About the group
Pregnancy is such a unique phase of life and can be empowering and fulfilling but also overwhelming and emotional. For immigrant families navigating a new system of care, pregnancy can bring up a lot of questions, anxieties, and heightened feelings of isolation.
This online four-week group is a space for those who are pregnant to connect to one another, ask questions, and discuss a range of topics related to pregnancy and the transition to parenthood. The group is open to anyone who is pregnant - whether they are in the beginning of their journey or in those last few weeks before birth.
This is a peer support group and does not serve as a childbirth education course or as a source of medical advice or information.
Topics covered include:
The emotional ups and downs of pregnancy and postpartum
Relationships with partners, extended family, and friends—setting boundaries and asking for help
The transition to parenthood and shifting identities
Expectations, worries, and sources of support for the postpartum time

4-Week Pregnancy Support Group Online
You’re pregnant and wondering if what you’re feeling or thinking is “normal,” but you’re not quite sure who to turn to. Maybe this is your first, second, or third pregnancy—your first in Germany. This time far from your usual support system. Alongside the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy, you may also be navigating a new culture, a different healthcare system, a new language, and life as an immigrant.
You might have thought about joining local groups or connecting with others, but it can be hard to find people who truly understand what it’s like to be pregnant while living away from home.
Then, you find Afloat. Our four-week virtual pregnancy group offers a space to connect with other pregnant women across all stages of pregnancy who share similar experiences. There’s no fixed agenda—just a supportive, non-judgmental space to talk, listen, and be heard. Together, you can share questions, concerns, and moments of joy, while building a sense of community with others who understand what you’re going through. This group takes place in English.
Our Spring group will meet on Friday mornings (April 17 and 24th and May 8th and 15th) via Zoom from 11:30 to 12:30. Join from wherever you feel most comfortable, and come exactly as you are. We’re looking forward to meeting you.
Next group starts April 17
- Dates: April 17, April 24, May 8, May 15 (Fridays)
- Time: 11:30 - 12:30 CET

Kate Brownstein
Originally from Washington, DC, I’ve been living in Germany for nearly six years. Like many immigrants, my time here has been shaped by big life transitions—including losing my dad and becoming pregnant with my first child, all while far from my usual support network. Navigating pregnancy and preparing to give birth in a new country, and in a language I didn’t speak, felt overwhelming at best and impossible at worst, leaving me unsure of where I belonged.
Everything began to shift when I joined Afloat’s 4-week pregnancy group and later the in-person Heidelberg group. Connecting with other women going through similar experiences—many also becoming first- or second-time moms while adjusting to life in Germany—made me feel like there were other women feeling the same thing. It helped me feel more grounded and much less alone. I became a facilitator initially for the in-person group, taking a short break to welcome my second baby in August. I am very excited to be facilitating the Pregnancy Group this time around.
Professionally, I am a Speech-Language Pathologist serving the English-speaking community in Germany. I’m passionate about helping others feel seen, supported, and connected—especially during life transitions—and I’m so grateful to now be part of creating that space for others.
